This all happened so quickly I didn't get a chance to post. Well Echosex you are acting like a real jerk, valuing your personal experience over the laws of physics.

Using benchmarks and programs running on the same processor as you are teststing is completely unreliable as a way of testing clock speed unless you have characterised possible correlations between the processor temperature and software behavious. What is really needed is an external independent method of testing the cpu clock speed and from all the overclocking articles I have read they have never do their testing in a scientific way. Also dry ice is a poor way of going about it, liquid nitrogen would be better.

Anyway whatever experience you have the way you attempted to discredit zehly is in poor taste, whereas the laws of physics are not bent by the anecdotal evidence of a overclocker.

I would also expect you need a controlled rate cooling system to prevent thermal shock from breaking your processor and surrounding components.

I think I'll go with zehly's professionalism over other's amatuer experience.

Regarding cooling though... I figure my processor is on borrowed time. I have it in a machine with THREE case fans and it still runs at 120F at rest and around 132F under load. Now I'm no expert... but that seems too high. Of course it doesn't help that the average ambient temperature in the room is about 80F.

Yes I use Farenheit... I'm an ignorant American and don't know better.

Look let me re-phrase everything I've said so this doesn't go any farther downhill than it has.

Zehly has the right to post what she thinks and/or knows, for that I give her credit. She has taken the time to read my topic and applied her information that she knows into the topic, once again I give her credit. She has made a post with solid facts and users behind it as well.

Now I myself am not the one to try to exaggerate stories like a fisherman would do, me and my highly-skilled friend managed to pull this off. Now I am not saying we did this without a hitch, we had screwups. We managed to burn it in a few spots afterwards, we did get shocked several times, nothing severe though.

But the facts I agree with, some of them I broke when it comes to the laws or physics, but it was for a split second or at most a minute. For example, I did get it to idle and load XP with temps under -40C. Now I have no idea how, maybe the material of case or even the rubber that my dry ice system is made up of somehow shorted the electric charge and caused it to not shock and/or burn. The 2800mhz was the most it could handle, and even then it would freeze. I am just saying that I got it to load Windows, not games, not apps, just Windows. If I wanted it to be very stable I probably could have gotten it to maybe 2100 or 2000mhz.

Now this was just an extreme project, I really didn't think some of you would believe me, and you are entitled to your opinion. I however found it to be a wonderful project, and afterwards we decided to set the voltage to max and fry the CPU and motherboard, then we tossed it out. Ah, good stuff!

I apologize for ensuing in an unnecessary flame war with you.

I concede that it is possible for your project to--under proper circumstances--function briefly. After doing a little playing around in the lab today, we were able to come up with a way using carbon-fiber tubing to augment and replicate your experiment.

We did verify our results using an infrared laser as well as thermal imaging (which, due to research-lab policy, cannot be published as it was not an approved experiment, hehe). The lowest temperature we were able to maintain was 232.18 kelvin (-40.97C) for 31.2 seconds at cpu-idle. We used picobsd and a boot image to flood cpu usage using JMP/CMP/NOP/RET instructions, and the peak observed dye temperature was 240.91 kelvin (-32.24C) for 8.1 seconds. Once that happened, the dye did short-circuit, resulting in a peak temperature of 464.31 kelvin (191.16C), and after current was removed, quickly cooled to 172.88 kelvin (-100.27C) .

Nice experiment though, it was fun and we got to fry an Intel processor.. I hate Intel.

I used to love ati but they have been trailing behind nvidia for a year or so. I mean their crossfire need an external cable to link up the two graphics cards!
